Glasgow Comic Con Joins Epic Comic Con.
Glasgow Comic Con is evolving.
Set up by BHP Comics as a fan convention held annually that celebrated all forms of comic books. It is the longest-running comic con in Scotland and second longest-running in the UK.
The first Glasgow Comic Con was held in 2011 at the Mackintosh Church in Queens Cross. It was a one-day event that featured less than 5 small press comic book creators and 500 attendees.
By 2013 the event expanded to a two day event and moved to the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA). And then expanded the following years to encompass The Renfield Centre and the Glasgow School of Art.
By 2015, the event moved to the Royal Concert Hall. Allowing the event to increase it’s footfall and exhibitor space. BHP Comics closed down in mid 2024. The events future and place was in limbo, many talks happened with national organisations about caretaking it, with no firm conclusion.
By late 2024, Sha Nazir (former BHP Comics publisher and founder of Glasgow Comic Con) set up Fan Frontier, with a remit in creating large scale pop culture shows with heart. Now with a singular vision, Glasgow Comic Con joins Fan Frontiers portfolio.
At Glasgow Comic Cons heart, the event set out to promote independent creators and makers of comic books and to foster and develop a professional creative industry around that. It has succeeded in doing both. And now, within the platform of Epic Comic Con, GCC replaces the Comics Village as the beating heart of the con, with comics at it's centre. Becoming one of the many componant parts that make up the broad and expanding interests of the fans.
